Mold can cling to the tape surface, interfere with playback, and in severe cases contribute to shedding or physical damage. Running a moldy tape through a VCR can drag contamination across the tape path, heads, rollers, and guides. That may harm the tape and put every clean tape played afterward at risk.
The recording itself may still be intact beneath the visible growth. However, recovery is never a promise made from appearance alone. A tape with light surface mold that has been stored for years in a dry room may have a very different outlook than one that was soaked, heat-damaged, or left in a humid garage for decades.
Can Moldy Videotapes Be Recovered Safely?

Do not store it in a refrigerator or freezer, where temperature changes can introduce condensation when the tape is removed.
